The course also has a variety of jumps and turns. Every
track is different, providing a unique challenge to many
levels of riders.

How do you get started?
First, you need a bike - one with either 20” or 24” tires and no gears. (bikes with 24”

tires are termed “cruisers”). You don’t need to invest a ton of money in a bike, especially when you are first starting out. Get a bike that fits your budget, and if you decide BMX racing is the best sport there is (like I believe), then you can consider investing in something more substantial.

Your bike must be stripped of its kickstand, chain guard, reflectors and pegs (if it has them). These can be dangerous on the race track. If you have any questions about a bike, visit a local bike shop that is familiar with BMX racing bikes, or send us a email and we’ll give you some information.

YOU MUST WEAR A HELMET! The helmet is the most important part of your equipment. A full face helmet or a helmet with a mouth guard attached is required to race.

Long pants and a long sleeve shirt are also required for racing. They should not be too loose (so your pant leg doesn’t get caught in your chain). Gloves are highly recommended.

Once you have your equipment, locate a track near you and get familiar with riding it. Riding around your yard and neighborhood is also good practice when you aren’t able to get to the track.
